Select categories to help listeners discover your tour

You can now select themed categories for all of your tour(s). Choose from the 35 options we’ve added so far, like “Ancient History”, “Religious Sites”, or “Local Legends” to help listeners find exactly what they’re looking for. The feature is already live on the web, so start selecting your categories now to get the full benefit.

Choosing the right categories for your tour

Think of categories as a way to reach the exact listeners who you had in mind when you were creating the tour. You can pick one to five categories from our 35 available options (at least one is required to publish). If you don’t see a category that fits your tour, you’re welcome to suggest it in the chat below.

Here’s where you can add categories for your existing tours.

  1. Open the final touches tab for your tour:
  • Open your publisher dashboard and scroll down to the bottom
  • Find the relevant tour in the “Your Tours” section
  • Under “Manage Tour” on the right, click the “Distribution” button (this will take you to your tour in Mapmaker)
  • Click “Final touches” at the top of the page
  1. Select your categories:
  • Choose one to five categories (to deselect a category, just click on it again)
  • Click “Save” when you’re happy with your selection

Choose categories that genuinely reflect your tour’s theme. Just because you mention a few places to stop for something to eat, it doesn’t mean your tour is food-themed. We also want to consider and manage listeners’ expectations. We don’t want someone buying an architecture-themed tour that only mentions one building.

We’ve already assigned some categories to select tours based on our knowledge of the tours. You’re welcome to change these and add additional ones that better represent your tour.

In the final touches tab, you’ll also see our Terms and Conditions and a publish tab with the date that your tour was published. You can read more about our updated final touches process on our documentation.

How categories help your tour get noticed

With a current total of 1784 tours in 548 destinations, we’re now publishing a new VoiceMap tour every single day – and we plan on publishing even more. This growth can sometimes make it a little tricky for new tours to stand out, especially given the consistent quality of our existing tours. Categories are another way we help your tour to get noticed and help listeners discover the specific themes that interest them.

Here’s how categories will appear below the tour description

The future of categories

We recently updated the search function on both the web and the app so listeners can search for their favourite publishers by name. Soon, they’ll be able to search for specific categories, like “Black History” or “Museums” or use categories to filter for specific tours, like they can now do with tour types (Walk, Run, Indoor, Drive).

We’re also planning to display themed collections on country and city pages. When someone browses tours in a specific destination, they might see curated sections like “Food Tours in France” or “Literature Tours in London”.

Categories also help us understand what listeners want and where we can fill gaps. Just as our Key Destinations program helped us create more tours in popular locations, categories will help us identify the themes and topics that resonate most with our audience.

Thanks! This is a great upgrade to the features in VoiceMap, and will definitely make it easier for customers to find what they are looking for. I have already added my UNESCO World Heritage sites with the correct category.

This is such a good idea. I’ve updated my tours with the new Categories options. But is it possible to have a category that would reflect Quirky or Alternative Points of Interest? That’s not the best title for the category but my Harbourside Tour is themed around lesser known points of interest in and around the harbourside which I think is possibly its own category?

Regarding categories, I would like to add these additional ones, as I am in Mexico, and cultural history, indigenous businesses, and local artisans are integral to my tours. Gracias!

Thanks all. We’ve added the following categories (following other requests from publishers and suggestions from the team):

  • Celebrities And Gossip
  • Quirky
  • Pop Culture
  • Top Sights

@sun4sandra Do you think “Business And Commerce” or “Markets” could apply to your tours? We also don’t want to make these too niche, so they only apply to a few tours. That said, if other publishers would find “Local Artisans” useful, we could add that.

My tour is a photography tour and I know that there are other Voicemap photography tours in other cities as well. So I was surprised not to see a “photo tour” category. There is a specific group of travelers that they will be interested in photo tours only.

What a great idea! I was wondering whether I would see categories that would fit my off-the-beaten-track tours in Paris… and I did, so great job! And special thanks to both @mrsamandaarmstrong for your Quirky suggestion, and @helene for the agility to include it: it just works very well for what I intend to do with VoiceMap.

Hi @knuraydin thanks for the suggestion. We’ve added “Photography” as a category. Since you’ve already picked five categories for your tour, you’ll just have to swap it out with an existing one.

My two walks focus on history of medicine/health care but unfortunately there aren’t really any suitable categories available. Any interest in adding something along these lines?

Love it! Could you consider adding the following categories as well?

  • Women’s History
  • Monuments & Memorials

Thanks for keeping current with the search functions. Much appreciated!

Categories are a great addition! How about something along the lines of “off the beaten track” options? Like:

  • Less-traveled paths
  • Under-the-radar spots
  • Lesser-known places
  • Beyond the tourist trail

Thanks @irengurarye @nick.black @amyemcmahon for the suggestions!

Since we’re using categories as a discovery tool to help listeners find tours that match their specific interests, we need to strike a balance. Categories should be broad enough to include multiple tours but specific enough to be genuinely helpful for filtering.

For now, we’ve added Women’s History as a category.

Medical History is an interesting suggestion but we don’t currently have enough tours in this category to justify adding it. If your tours cover medical topics, hospitals, or health history - let us know below, to help us gauge interest in it as a category.

Keep the suggestions coming! You know your tours best, so your input is invaluable in helping us make the best use of this feature.

Thanks Helene for asking me to share my idea for a category. I have written three tours and all have to do with the American West. While my Tombstone tour is definitely “Wild West” my new Old Town Scottsdale tour has more Western art, Western fashion, and Native American arts and crafts. Since the American West covers millions of acres and dozens of major cities most of which have pioneer West backgrounds but modern West trends like Houston, Dallas, Denver, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle I’m sure there are scores of tour authors who could “check the American West box” even if it’s not the major focus of their tour. Global audiences have loved the American West since Buffalo Bill first took his Wild West Show to Europe in 1887. They have loved American West literature since Mark Twain’s novels appeared in the 1870s and when the Bonanza TV series played in Japan in the 1980s the American West gained global popularity. I definitely believe that many American tour author would benefit from an American West category and hope others will agree. I’m sure VoiceMap listeners from all over the world, but especially those in the United States, would click on this category considering how many popular movies, TV shows, and books about the American West are still on major best-seller lists.

We’ve added a couple more categories:

  • Politics
  • Indigenous History
  • Sport
  • American West

We’ve also started adding some categories to tours in the lead up to next week’s deadline. So, if you haven’t selected categories for your tours yet, you might see a couple added to your tours. You’re the one who know your tours best, so please review these, and make any necessary changes.
